Students who struggle in English often have weak underlying reading comprehension and writing skills.  Students with poor time management skills also face challenges in English because they do not set aside enough time for reading, and as a result rush through or fail to finish reading assignments.  Effective writing requires time for planning and editing, two steps that are regularly overlooked by students in their rush to get assignments completed.

The StudySpot London Approach to English Tutoring

An academic coach supports a student struggling in English by focusing on the underlying skills that drive success, rather than simply helping complete assignments or editing finished work. While traditional English tutoring might review a novel, suggested essay changes, or provide the “right” answers, an academic coach works to build the student’s ability to think, read, and communicate independently.

Many challenges in English stem from gaps in core academic skills such as reading comprehension, note-taking, idea organization, and written expression. An academic coach helps the student develop active reading strategies, such as identifying main ideas, annotating texts, and tracking themes or arguments as they read. Instead of summarizing material for the student, the coach teaches them how to extract meaning on their own.

When it comes to writing, the focus shifts to process over product. A coach guides the student in breaking down assignments, planning essays, structuring paragraphs, and organizing their thoughts before writing begins. They may introduce frameworks for building arguments, using evidence effectively, and editing with purpose, rather than relying on last-minute corrections.

Time management and task initiation are also key. Students learn how to start assignments earlier, manage longer-term projects, and avoid feeling overwhelmed by large reading or writing tasks.

Over time, this skill-based approach builds confidence and independence. Students become more capable readers, clearer thinkers, and stronger writers, with strategies they can apply across all subjects and throughout their academic careers.

Working directly with the students current English content, the coach and student will work together to create essay outlines, prepare for tests, and discuss the books they read with the goal of deepening the student’s understanding.
