Executive Functioning & Academic Coaching
Executive functioning refers to the mental processes that us manage our responsibilities and accomplish our goals. These skills include planning our time, organizing our things, initiating and completing tasks, and controlling our behaviour. As school expectations increase, students with weak executive functioning often struggle not because of ability, but because they lack the systems to stay organized and work independently.
At StudySpot, our Academic Coaching directly strengthens these foundational executive functioning skills while simultaneously teaching practical academic strategies students can use right away. We help students build systems to keep orgnized and manage their time. This includes organizing binders and digital files, planning their week using time-blocking strategies, creating to-do lists, and breaking down large assignments into manageable steps, all core practices outlined in the our Study Skills Manual.
At the same time, we address skill gaps that often accompany executive functioning challenges, like weak working memory and difficulty with sustained attention. Students are taught active reading techniques like SQ4R, as well as how to annotate textbooks, identify main ideas, and process information one chunk at a time, all tools that both improve comprehension and reduce overwhelm.
We also coach students the process of writing essays, planning projects, and effective exam and test preparation strategies, so they learn how to approach academic work effectively and independently. These skills extend beyond the classroom and equip students with lifelong habits for independence, productivity, and personal responsibility.
Academic Coaching is ideal for students who are capable but do not generate the results that are reflective of their abilities. Our goal is to help students feel in control of their schoolwork rather than overwhelmed by it, and to build academic habits that lead not just to better grades today, but greater confidence and independence for years to come.
