Science courses pose a great challenge to many students due to the quantity and complexity of information and the skills required to manage it.

The sheer volume of science notes and handouts can overwhelm disorganized students.  Backpacks filled with loose paper, cluttered binders, and missing notes are frequently seen in our students.  The vast number of assignments, labs, and tests require students to have an effective organizational system in place.  StudySpot Hamilton coaches work to establish and maintain a system that allows their students to manage their school work more effectively.

Science textbooks are filled with valuable information.  Most of this information is in the form of examples, anecdotes, diagrams, and charts, all presented to support the reader to better learn and understand main concepts.  The ability to distinguish between main ideas and supporting details is a very important skill to develop so students are not overwhelmed by the volume of information they face.  Coaches and students work together to read and annotate text, utilizing SQ4R reading strategies, and discuss ways of identifying information that is likely to be on tests and exams.

Science tests can be especially challenging due to the varying types of test questions.  Multiple choice, word problems, diagram labelling, and short/long answer questions can all appear on the same test.  Students at StudySpot Hamilton will learn multiple active study strategies for test preparation, and practice these skills in the context of their science curriculum.
