Learning Strategies for Post-Secondary Students

Transitioning to post-secondary can be an entirely new educational experience including new schedules, tougher coursework, and higher expectations.  A StudySpot Learning Strategist can help students make that transition successfully by teaching the skills and habits needed to stay on top of their new responsibilities and learn effectively.

Executive Skills & Academic Planning

Success at both university and college depends the student’s ability to organize, plan, prioritize, and follow through.  Our strategists can help you;

  • Set clear, achievable goals focusing on both on how you learn and what you would like to achieve.
  • Create semester and weekly schedules that allow you to anticipate busy periods.
  • Build consistent daily and weekly routines that help you stay on top of your work and increase productivity.

Organization & Time Management

Post secondary life offers freedom, but also demands structure. With your learning strategist, you will design systems that keep you organized and productive:

  • Build weekly study schedules
  • Use time-blocking strategies to manage independent study hours.
  • Break large assignments into smaller, manageable tasks.
  • Develop personalized to-do systems that reduce overwhelm and keep priorities clear.

Lecture-Based Learning

University lectures can move quickly, so a significant amount of the learning is expected to take place independendently, both before and after lectures.   Attempting to listen to a professor, understand what is being presented, and take comprehensive notes at the same time, is extremely difficult.  Our learning strategist will teach you how to prepare for lectures as part of our four-step learning cycle.

  1. Pre-lecture readings
  2. Lecture notes
  3. Editing and Conslidating
  4. Studying and Active Recall

Students often find that once they learn this process, lectures become less overwhelming  and studying becomes far more effective.

Academic Skills

Post-secondary-level learning goes beyond memorization. Your strategist will help you develop research-based learning strategies to make you a more efficient student and generate the results that are reflective of your abilities.

  • Active reading strategies to improve comprehension
  • Note-taking that deepens understanding and improves retention
  • Study skills that improve your ability to prepare for, and write, exams

Academic Writing

Strong academic writing is a skill that can be learned and continually developed. Our strategist can support you through every stage of the writing process.

  • Academic Sourcing and Researching
  • Thesis Development and Outlining
  • How to Structure an Argument
  • Getting Your Thoughts on to Paper
  • Proper Editing

Learning Disabilities

For students with an identified learning disability, learning strategist can help you develop the compensatory skills that can help you make a successful transtion to post-secondary learning.  These skills and sessions can be taylored to your individual needs.  If you live in Ontario, you may be elegible for funding to support the costs of learning strategies support.
