Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects brain development and results in differences in social interaction, communication, interests and behavior. The term “spectrum” refers to the wide range of communication and sensory differences or challenges a person with ASD may have.

Students with ASD often struggle with executive functioning, leading to poor academic outcomes. They may have trouble with skills like planning, staying organized, sequencing information and maintaining focus and attention. Some will pay attention to minor details, but have trouble seeing how these details fit into a bigger picture. Completing an assignment requiring the ability to sequence the steps needed and determine how to organize and prioritize these steps in order to complete the assignment, may be difficult.  Students with ASD and weak working memory may find it difficult to remember and apply crucial information to a task.

At StudySpot Okanagan, our coaches understand Autism Spectrum Disorder and the unique nature of every student. We know that effective instruction for those with ASD may include using visual supports, breaking information down into more manageable pieces, providing shorter learning sessions, and using clear, unambiguous language. We work with students’ learning strengths, providing a personalized learning plan that addresses their individual needs, guiding them towards improving their executive and academic skills.
