{"id":462,"date":"2016-07-10T13:48:36","date_gmt":"2016-07-10T13:48:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/studyspot.ca\/london\/?p=462"},"modified":"2016-07-10T13:48:36","modified_gmt":"2016-07-10T13:48:36","slug":"reading-comprehension-sq4r-part-2-active-reading","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/studyspot.ca\/london\/blog\/2016\/07\/10\/reading-comprehension-sq4r-part-2-active-reading\/","title":{"rendered":"Reading Comprehension (SQ4R) &#8211; Part 2: Active Reading"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>A well-respected and often recommended approach to reading text information is SQ4R.\u00a0\u00a0 In a recent post we looked at the first two stages of this strategy: Survey and Question.\u00a0 In this blog, we\u2019ll take a look at the first R \u2013 Reading.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The third stage of the SQ4R reading comprehension strategy is the \u2018Reading\u2019 stage.\u00a0 Make no mistake about it, reading text material is tough stuff.\u00a0\u00a0<!--more--> It commands intense concentration and focus and it demands a level of commitment that students need to develop.\u00a0 For the most part, students read very <em>passively<\/em>.\u00a0 They fail to see just how much mental effort is required and how much they have to \u2018want\u2019 to learn the material.\u00a0 Are you reading your textbook while sitting on your bed?\u00a0 That\u2019s passive.\u00a0 Are you reading your research articles while thinking about the NHL playoffs?\u00a0 That\u2019s passive.\u00a0 Are you reading your texts while listening to music (or Tweeting, or checking Facebook)?\u00a0 That\u2019s REALLY passive.\u00a0 In fact, are you reading while using a highlighter?\u00a0 That\u2019s probably passive too.<\/p>\n<p>So how can students learn to read <em>actively<\/em>?\u00a0 Shifting from passive to active reading is difficult, but possible for students who give themselves a fighting chance.\u00a0 First, students need to read while sitting at a well-lit desk.\u00a0 They need to turn off the music and television and shut off the distractions.\u00a0 Then, they need to grab a pencil and get ready to think.\u00a0 To help with reading comprehension, students should use a pencil to track their thoughts.\u00a0 They can summarize main points in the margin and identify places where the author shifts the argument.\u00a0 Further, they can use the pencil like a highlighter and underline parts of the textbook that are important, or interesting, or unexpected.\u00a0\u00a0 Students should also write question marks beside sections that are not clear and which require later follow-up.\u00a0 It\u2019s also a good idea to pay close attention to material that \u2018answers\u2019 the questions raised in the Q-stage of SQ4R.\u00a0 Using a pencil in this fashion will likely feel strange at the beginning.
