Learning Disabilities

StudySpot was originally created as the follow through to the typical educational assessment. The recommended study skills that often are found in these reports, usually focused on organization, reading, writing, and studying, make up the core of our academic coaching service. Approximately one third of our clients find us via a direct referral from a psychologist and about half our students have been diagnosed with a learning disability and/or attention deficit.

Although we do not address a student’s learning disability specifically, we focus on the executive and academic skills required to properly compensate for his or her learning challenge.  Schools will usually provide accommodation as directed by an IEP, and will often be in the form of extra time on tests, the providing of class notes, and access to learning resource classes. However, schools are often unable to work directly with a student to address their individual needs. Academic coaching is designed to help the individual student develop and practice his or her own executive and academic skills to allow them to become an independent learner, regardless of his or her challenges.

The most common learning disabilities we see are in the areas of executive functioning, working memory, written output and gifted LD.

  • Thank you very much for providing such a very helpful facility for my daughter. She has benefited so much from the program, not only for her present situation but I think for life.
