Gifted LD

Students that have been diagnosed as gifted but also suffering from a learning disability, face a wide range of challenges both socially and academically. In the context of the support we can provide, we address those students where the discrepancy between their intellectual capability and their academic results can be attributed to poor academic skills.

Gifted students are often a victim of their own strengths, being able to achieve academically, especially in the elementary years, by taking advantage of strong cognitive abilities, primarily memory. These students are able to get by early on without developing the organizational and study skills that will be required for higher learning.

Students who are diagnosed as Gifted LD usually struggle with keeping organized and depend too much on their memory when it comes to studying for tests and exams. We work with these students to develop the skills related to the use of their agenda, organization of their notes and binders and getting their work done in a timely manner. We also expose students to more effective test preparation strategies moving beyond the passive re-reading of notes to more active studying techniques. Pre-writing skills such as brainstorming and outlining are important to organizing and communicating ones thoughts clearly, which is another common weakness of gifted LD students.
